Understanding Car Repairs

Make sense of a diagnosis, a written estimate and the records that come with a repair. Pages will be built from official sources and checked before they go up.

Questions this site will answer

• What should a written car repair estimate include?
• When should I seek a second opinion on an expensive repair?
• How do I compare a shop’s maintenance plan with my owner’s manual?
• What should I check about replacement parts and repair warranties?
• What should I do when a repair bill or the completed work is disputed?

How we build these pages

Each answer will name its sources and the date we checked them. This site doesn't rank or recommend any business yet. Read our methodology.
